| What's new in Israel | | Hits：1195 AddTime：2014/7/30 8:17:20 | According to the Jerusalem Post, the Israeli cabinet approved a plan on Sunday to increase the quota of foreign construction workers to 15000 by July 2019. The plan was drafted by URI Ariel, Minister of housing and construction, and supported by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, finance minister Yair Lapid, and economy minister Naftali Bennett.
Since July 2011, the Israeli cabinet has decided to keep the quota of foreign construction workers at around 8000. However, since no bilateral labor agreement has been signed with any country capable of providing a large number of foreign construction workers, the number of workers working in Israel has not been able to achieve this goal. It is estimated that there are about 5000 foreign construction workers currently working in Israel. Israeli property developers claim that many construction projects have been delayed due to a lack of sufficient numbers of foreign construction workers. So far, China is considered to be the most capable country to provide a large number of skilled construction workers to Israel. Therefore, Israeli builders have been calling on the government to sign a bilateral labor agreement with China as soon as possible.
In the past few years, while introducing foreign construction workers, the Israeli government has been increasing the training of its own construction workers and hopes to gradually replace foreign construction workers. However, the plan approved on Sunday means that the actual effect of training local construction workers is not obvious, and the Israeli government hopes to further increase the number of foreign construction workers.
