Skilled immigrants in Australia | Hits:3159 AddTime:2014/7/30 8:17:50 | On June 8, 2014, Australian local media reported that in order to solve the problem of labor shortage, the Australian federal government relaxed the conditions for skilled immigrants, adding three occupations, chef, bricklayer and tile, to the "skilled occupation list", which will take effect from July this year. This means that workers do not need an employer's guarantee to obtain a permanent visa.
Andrew Robb, Australia's minister of trade and investment, said the tourism industry is facing a dual shortage of labor and skills, with a labor shortage of 56000 people, including 26000 skilled workers, next year.
Michaelia cash, Assistant Minister for immigration and border protection, said the move would be welcomed in remote areas, where demand for the three occupations had risen. Under the general skilled migration scheme, professionals and other skilled migrants can enter Australia without employer guarantee. The Australian federal government has announced a quota of 43990 general skilled immigrants for the next fiscal year. In addition, for each occupation in the list, the visa quota shall not exceed 6% of the number of workers in that occupation. Kashi said the federal government had decided to limit the quota of chefs to 3% in the first six months.
According to the ABS Labor Research Report, there are about 76100 chefs, 23360 bricklayers and 15800 bricklayers in Australia. According to this calculation, a maximum of 4566 chefs can get a visa, while the quota for bricklayers and bricklayers is 1401 and 948 respectively.
